Sowing seeds in a Garden

July 01, 2010 By: Samantha Asher Category: Advice General

As you start a garden, you must first till the soil, fertilize it, and then plant your flowers, trees, bushes, vegetable plants, etc. There are different ways you can do this, either by planting seedlings, transplanting entire plants, or sowing seeds. If you want to save some money, you can sow seeds. This way, all you have to buy is seeds which will probably only cost you a couple dollars for a large pack.

One way to sow the seeds is by sowing them in trays and growing them first, and then transplanting them into the garden. First, get some planter trays. Fill them with soil, pat it down, and moisten the dirt. Sprinkle the seeds over-top, spacing them according to the directions. Cover them again with a small layer of dirt and pat it down. Soon they will start to grow, and when it’s time to plant, with no dangers of frost, transplant them in your garden. This is a great way because they have a higher chance of surviving and it’s still as cheep as buying seeds with just an added expense of trays. (more…)

Cultivating Soil

June 03, 2010 By: Samantha Asher Category: Soil Needs

What does it mean to cultivate your garden? You are simply making the soil better. If you walked into your backyard right now, I’m sure you wouldn’t just throw some tomato seeds on the grass and expect plump tomatoes in a couple months by doing nothing else.

When you cultivate the soil, you prepare it for the plants you are going to grow. To begin, let’s assume you are just starting a garden and only have your grassy yard. Ideally, you will use a motorized tiller. A tiller takes all the hard work out of cultivating your garden. You just turn it on and push it across your garden. It will break up all the grass and ground for you.

A tiller is ideal because it is so easy, but they can be expensive. If you are lucky, you can borrow one from someone. If you are serious about gardening and know that you might use it a least every couple of years and have a large garden, it would be worth buying one. (more…)

The Best Soil for Your Garden

May 04, 2010 By: Samantha Asher Category: Soil Needs

Soil is one of the most important parts of a successful, fruitful garden. If your soil is rocky, full of clay, or depleted of enough nutrients, you will not have healthy plants. Think about it, if a newborn baby was fed no nutrients from birth, would you expect it to be healthy? The same goes for plants. A seed will sprout with just water, but it won’t get much bigger as time goes on if there are no nutrients.

When you first plant your seeds in planter trays, the soil doesn’t need to be extra special. You can use plain potting soil if you want, just make sure it is light with no clumps. Also, you want to make sure it’s packed around the seeds enough so that they have something to hold onto. (more…)

Gardening Supplies

April 06, 2010 By: Samantha Asher Category: Supplies

Before you begin any garden, you have to make sure you have the right supplies. If you start digging up your yard and find out that you need a garden hoe to do this and a trowel to do that and you don’t have those tools, you will be stuck with an ugly yard and nothing to do. Before you start anything, you need to be prepared.

In order to figure out what you need, go through the steps of the gardening process and figure out what is necessary for each step. First, you need to cultivate the plot and prepare the soil. In order to do this, you will need a tiller. A tiller is motorized and easily breaks up the ground before you. They are very efficient and easy to use, but can be expensive.

If you don’t have the budget for a till, you can replace it with several tools. Of course, you will need a shovel for the initial digging. If you have especially tough, rocky land, you may need a pickax to help you with the initial digging. Once you’ve broken up most of the dirt and removed the tough grass on top, a garden hoe will be necessary to further break up the soil. (more…)

Are you a vegetable fanatic and have always wanted to grow your own? Maybe you want to save money and grow your own organic vegetables, or maybe you’ve always wanted to start a garden and thought a vegetable garden would be more rewarding. Your reason may be one of these, or another one completely. Whatever you’re reason, you’ve decided to start a vegetable garden and want to know how.

Your first step is to make several decisions. You need to decide how big you want your garden to be, where your garden will go, what you’re are going to plant, and how much you are going to plant. Now that you know what you’re going to do, you will need to get all the necessary supplies. Make sure you have everything you’ll need including seeds, fertilizer, garden tools such as shovels, trowels, cultivators, etc., a hose or watering can, and whatever else you think you’ll need. (more…)

What Kinds of Herbs Should you Grow?

February 10, 2010 By: Samantha Asher Category: Gardens - Herb

Herbs are a great way to add flavor to your food. Fresh herbs will add even more taste, and the best way to have the freshest, most delicious herbs possible is to grow them yourself. You can grow herbs indoors or outdoors. I prefer growing them indoors because I can put them right in my kitchen and have them fresh and ready whenever I need them all year round. If you have a window in your kitchen, you have a perfect place to have herbs get lots of sun and grow right in front of your cooking.

When it’s time to start planting and you begin your garden, you fall upon an important question. What kind of herbs should you grow? Should you grow a large variety of many different kinds or just one or two kinds? Which herbs will grow the best? This depends on several factors that need to be taken into account.

How much space do you have and what kinds of pots and planters are you using? If you only have space for a couple of plants, you should only grow the herbs you will use the most. If you have pots, you can put one type of herb in each. If you have boxes, you will need to be careful to space different herb plants far enough apart. (more…)

When Should You Start a Vegetable Garden?

January 11, 2010 By: Samantha Asher Category: Gardens - Vegetable

Growing your own vegetables is a great way to save money and enjoy fresh, organic vegetables. The vegetables you buy in the store are often not organic, and when you do find the organic vegetables, they are so much more expensive. Growing your own vegetables can be very cheap, and after a couple of years using the same tools and plants, they can virtually be free. Growing vegetables is not fool-proof, but it isn’t too difficult either. With the right seeds or seedlings, soil, watering schedule, fertilizer, and care, you don’t have to be a pro to grow vegetables. With a little knowledge and some trial and error, you can have your own meager or robust crop by the end of the season.

To prepare for a vegetable garden, you have to get all the right tools. It’s important to get the correct tools so that you can effectively care for your garden. You need soil, fertilizer, seeds or plants, a garden hoe, a shovel, a rake, and a watering can or hose. Just as important as your tools, you need to grow your garden at the right time. I can’t give you the exact time of year because it will differ depending on the region you live it. Basically, you start in the spring and harvest in the fall. (more…)
