A-bu’ti-lon. Flowering Maple ; Chinese Lantern . About 150 species of tropical shrubs (rarely herbs) of the mallow family, a few of which are grown as bedding plants.

Description
Leaves alternate, often veined and resembling a maple leaf; some varieties are variegated. Flowers showy, solitary, and borne in leaf axils, usually drooping and often trumpet-shaped.

Hy-bis’kus. An important genus of over 250 species of herbs, shrubs, and trees, with many popular garden annuals.

Description
Leaves alternate, with veins arranged finger-fashion, sometimes lobed or parted. Flowers usually large, generally bell-shaped, with 5 petals and sepals, or sometimes the sepals united to form a 5-toothed calyx. Stamens united in a tubular structure that surrounds the style. Often a series of bracts beneath the calyx.

Al-see’a. Hollyhock . A genus of about 60 species of tall, leafy-stemmed biennial or perennial herbs, all from the temperate regions of the Old World.

Description
They have usually hairy alternate leaves and a terminal, spirelike cluster of showy flowers, the 5 petals usually notched, originally red or white, but variously colored in the horticultural forms. Below the calyx is a series of 6-9 bracts.

Mal’va. Mallow . About 30 species of widely distributed herbs, several grown for ornament, but some rather weedy.

Description
Leaves alternate, usually angled, lobed, or dissected. Flowers mostly in the leaf axils, solitary or clustered, most with 2 or 3 involucre-like bracts beneath them. Calyx united, but 5-cleft. Petals 5, with a notch at the tip, mostly pink or white.

Description
Stems hairy. Leaves alternate, somewhat maple-like, angled or lobed. Flowers rather showy, pink or purplish, below them a cluster of 3-9 bracts, united to form an involucre. Petals 5, notched or cut off at the tip, the base with a claw.
