How to get rid of insects in the garden

Nothing spoils a garden faster than a few pests. Sprays and gasses that do the trick to kill insects can also harm your garden and the environment in general – to say nothing of how unpleasant it can be for you, your children, or your pets to breathe in!

Store bought chemicals can get pretty pricey, too, and in most cases, there are methods to solve most insect related problems that plague you.

Trouble with Aphids? Ladybugs control the aphid population – you can usually buy a load of Ladybugs at your local nursery to take care of your aphids gone wild, for significantly less than a fumigation spray would go for. (more…)

Butterflies are the Gardens Most Beautiful Insects

Most people don’t think of butterflies as insects but they are. Butterflies are loved for their beauty. It is hard to think of another insect that is loved for their beauty. Insects are most often thought of as pests. Mosquitoes, black flies and horse flies to name a few can drive you crazy at times. Butterflies don’t bite or sting and are beautiful to look at.

Moths are cousins to butterflies and have the same life cycle. They are considered advanced insects because of their lifecycle. They have what is called a complete lifecycle because there are four distinct stages and each one looks completely different and has its own purpose.

The transformation from one stage to another is one of the most experiential wonders of nature taught to school children. The first stage is the egg which is tiny. The female attaches the egg to leaves, stems, or other things on or near the food the eventual caterpillar will eat. (more…)

While many types of insects, birds and animals seen in the home are unwanted intruders, others play a necessary position in pollinating plants and stirring seeds from one place to another. In fact, lacking the animal and insect helpers, most plants would be unable to mimic.

Even while most gardeners understand how important this rotation of pollination and seed disbursal is, few copious understand why it occurs, or how it profit both the plants and the animals.

The rewards of pollination and seed disbursal to the plants are painless to determine – they get to divide their seeds far and large, and inception new plants in far-off locations. The rewards the insects, birds and mammals grow are many as well, and they contain:

Nectar – nectar is actually a sweetened mixture, and, hence it is very cherished by all kinds of animals both for its good bite and for the ample energy it provides. Getting at this nectar is what prompts most pollinating insects, birds and animals to do such a good job. (more…)

Insects and Pruning of Window Gardens

The only ones troubling house plants are the green fly, the mealy bug, the scale, and the red spider.

The green fly is to be killed by a smoking with tobacco. Put the plant under a barrel with smoking tobacco; let it remain, say fifteen minutes; then give it a syringing.

Mealy bug is to be searched for and destroyed. Frequent sponging does much to keep down this pest.

Scale is to be treated in the same way. Warm soap-suds are peculiarly distasteful to the creature.

Red spider, which is seldom found on house plants, is nourished by a dry, warm atmosphere. Water is certain death. Keep the foliage syringed and atmosphere moist, and you will have no red spider. (more…)

Attract Insects To Your Garden

Is your plot your sanctuary? If so then how can you advance others to touch you? Frogs, birds and insects all must a home and with minimum stab you can induce them into your backyard and sentinel them help you swear it. Birds, frogs and insects are all critical for a balanced system in your patch. They can help keep mice at bay and your flora and plants to show. All that these creatures must, like the rest of us, are food and shelter.

Birds counter well to feeding throughout the year but particularly in the coldness, when untreated foods are scarce. Foods with a high fat subject, as well as the familiar bird seeds embrace in the colder months. You can buy unusual bird feeding fat blocks, or just melt lard into a mould. Nuts have a high fat content too and the more pied your offerings, the more diverse the birdlife you are apt to magnetize. (more…)
