Flowers Seeds

March 08, 2012 By: Timothy Samuel Category: Advice General

To plant small seeds, use your finger or the corner of a trowel to prepare a trench to the depth you desire. Take a few seeds and scatter them down the trench, it doesn’t have to be perfect. In most cases, seeds are sown closer than their final spacing because having too many seedlings is always better than having too few. You can always thin out the rows later. After sowing the seeds, spread a light layer of mulch or soil on top to protect them. This will also help the seeds germinate. Make sure that you thoroughly water right after planting.

Tip: For small seeds that are going straight into the garden, mix them with a little sand before spreading. Adding sand will help make it easier to properly space plants. (more…)

Caring For Your Flower Garden

May 29, 2011 By: Jon Simms Category: Gardens - Flower

Knowing how to care for your flower garden can make a big difference in the look and over-all health of your plants. Here are some simple hints to make your garden bloom with health

1. The essentials must always be given major consideration.
Your flower garden must have an adequate supply of water, sunlight, and fertile soil. Any lack of these basic necessities will greatly affect the health of plants. Water the flower garden more frequently during dry spells.

When planting bulbs, make sure they go at the correct depth. When planting out shrubs and perennials, make sure that you don’t heap soil or mulch up around the stem. If you do, water will drain off instead of sinking in, and the stem could develop rot through overheating.

2. Mix and match perennials with annuals.
Perennial flower bulbs need not to be replanted since they grow and bloom for several years while annuals grow and bloom for only one season. Mixing a few perennials with annuals ensures that you will always have blooms coming on.

3. Deadhead to encourage more blossoms.
Deadheading is simply snipping off the flower head after it wilts. This will make the plant produce more flowers. Just make sure that you don’t discard the deadhead on the garden or mildew and other plant disease will attack your plants.

4. Know the good from the bad bugs.
Most garden insects do more good than harm. Butterflies, beetles and bees are known pollinators. They fertilize plants through unintentional transfer of pollen from one plant to another. 80% of flowering plants rely on insects for survival.

Sowbugs and dung beetles together with fungi, bacteria and other microorganisms are necessary to help in the decomposition of dead plant material, thus enriching the soil and making more nutrients available to growing plants.

Other insects like lacewings and dragonflies are natural predators of those insects that do the real damage, like aphis.

An occasional application of liquid fertilizer when plants are flowering will keep them blooming for longer.
Always prune any dead or damaged branches. Fuchsias are particularly prone to snapping when you brush against them. The broken branch can be potted up to give you a new plant, so it won’t be wasted.

There is nothing quite as welcome as those beautiful spring flowers that seem to emerge from nowhere to welcome the arrival of spring. Bulb type flowers are really unique plants, because they spend most of their days resting quietly beneath the surface of the soil. Then right on schedule, up they come, full of bloom and vigor, and then almost as fast as they came, they go. Except for the green leafy part of the plant that tends to linger longer than we would like them to. (more…)

Pansies range in size from the smaller version called multifora, which has blooms of 1 ½ to 2 ½ inches in size to the larger sizes which can have blooms as large as 3 ½ to 4 ½ inches in size. How to Get Started With Flower Bulbs

February 12, 2010 By: D. Randolph Category: Gardens - Flower

Are you interested in learning about how to get started with flower bulbs? Here are a few tips that will help to get you started:

Choose the right bulbs.

Being particular about what bulbs you want to plant is not a bad thing. Keep the variety and the quality of the bulbs in the front of your mind while shopping. Selecting a bulb that will fit well into your environment is of highest importance. After you buy your bulbs, store them in a cool dry area that has good airflow. Never stack bulbs on top of each other or in a close pile. Label your bulbs so that you know what you have when it comes time to plant. Check the bulbs frequently for signs of decay while you are waiting to plant them.

Use good planting supplies.

Trowels or bulb diggers are good tools for planting small areas of bulbs. Spades are more useful in planting larger areas. Always remember to fertilize so that your bulbs get all the proper nutrients. When planting in a smaller area, a teaspoon of bone meal can be added into the soil before planting. Label where you plant each bulb so that you can easily keep organized. (more…)

Flower Seed

January 19, 2010 By: Peter Emerson Category: Gardens - Flower

Flowers have been grown and nurtured over years for personal and business purposes. A flower provides visual bliss in addition to a soothing aroma and an array of delightful colors. One can give cut flowers as gifts to celebrate events, express feelings or just grow them in a backyard.

It may sound strange when a botanist refers to singular divisions of a flower while referring to male and female reproductive organs. However, this is true. Flowers are used as a reproductive organ only in certain angiosperms plants. A pistil is located in the center of a flower and it contains female organs. It has a rounded lower base, which is the ovary. These contain reproductive cells called ovule. (more…)

The Beautiful Bird Of Paradise Flower

January 15, 2009 By: Morgan Hamilton Category: Gardens - Flower

California is one of the most beautiful places in the world. I can attest to this because I grew up in this wonderful state. However, I have to relocate to another state because of a few reasons. Anyway, this state is just drop dead gorgeous, from the ocean to the mountains. The flora is also one of best things that I love about California. I can recall that there was a bird of paradise flower growing at nearly every corner when I was living there.

Have you ever seen a bird of paradise flower? If you haven’t, then let me tell you that this flower is really amazing. It is one of the most sought after and extravagant blooms in the whole entire world. However, the climate of my current state does not allow me to grow this flower. I guess I can grow one in a greenhouse, but I don’t really think that I could do all that hard work just for the experience of seeing my favorite flower. Nevertheless, I still miss the bird of paradise flower.    (more…)

Flower Gardens – Sweet Smell of Summer

June 12, 2007 By: Hans Dekker Category: Gardens - Flower

Ahh, Summer in the your own flower garden. Butterflies, the sweet smell of ornamental herbs and blooming plants. There is something about a flower that seems to spark something inside of everyone. It could be that the flower is the ultimate reminder of spring and summer. The scent of freshly bloomed roses, the feel of the downy petal of a lily or the sweet sight of a bright daisy brings with it a feeling of joy.

Growing a beautiful flower is not a difficult task, but it does require planning and perseverance. A flower represents the ground from which it is placed and the gardener must know this before attempting growth.

Flowers are like real estate It is all about location, location, location. They must have environments that are suited to their particular needs. Take for example an African violet. This delicate plant’s fuzzy leaves and petals are easily marred by droplets of rain. If winning the local fair’s flower award is in mind, then imperfection in leaves and petals is important. (more…)

Summer Flowers – Planning is the Key

April 09, 2007 By: Hans Dekker Category: Gardens - Flower

Summer is a wonderful time for flowers, yet many gardens start to look bare of color or simply wilt when the summer heat strikes. That’s because gardeners often plant for a spring flush. Those flowers that bloom in spring fade off by summer because the extra heat does not suit them.

Yet there are many beautiful blooms that come into their own with that extra summer heat, so adding these to your planting will keep your garden looking a riot of color throughout summer. Both annuals and perennials bloom beautifully in the summer heat so choose some of each.

Annuals must be planted every year as their name suggests. They are usually only good for one season, so require a bit more work. But occasionally you will get an annual to come up the second year. Sunflowers, cosmos, salvia and marigolds are favorite annuals for summer flowers. Snow in summer; coxcomb and the globe amaranth are three less common flowers that thrive in the heat of summer, while angelonia, perilla and the sun coleus also make good choices. (more…)

Grow Exotic Flowers

March 10, 2007 By: Allison Agnock Category: Gardens - Flower, How To Grow...

Using indoor artificial light allows the home gardener to extend the gardening zone to a much higher one than might be possible in their particular outdoor growing situation. There has been a big trend in gardening circles to push the envelope of gardening zones by introducing tropical plants into outdoor gardening situations. It is also easy to grow exotic flowers indoors, when you have the help of great lighting that is available through the use of grow lights using a hydroponic digital ballast.

One type of exotic flower that is readily available for purchase is the orchid. This is a plant that loves the warm weather that is typically found in its native Philippines, India and southeast Asia. Orchids do not like direct sun, but instead prefer bright and indirect lighting. It performs well under fluorescent light. Consistent watering and appropriate air circulation, along with proper lighting, is needed to succeed with indoor orchids. (more…)
