  1. A term used to describe soil that has a ready supply of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and the other nutrients needed by plants. To fertilize plants is to supply these nutrients.
  2. A term used to describe a seed that has an embryo capable of developing into a new plant. To fertilize flowers is to transfer pollen from the anther of one flower to the stigma of the same or a different flower.
