Herbs have been used by humans since time immemorial. The wonderful thing about herbs is that most of them can be used directly and without any special preparation. This has made them one of the most accessible and primary source of food for people throughout the ages. Another reason why they are popular is because of the multiple uses they can be put to. Throughout history and around the world, across all cultures, varieties of herbs have been used by people in one way or the other.

Herbs grow fairly easily without requiring close attention. They grow as annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. They can be grown indoors or outdoors. Even for growing outdoors, they do not require much space because herb plants are usually small. Herbs can be used fresh or can be easily dried and stored for future use.

Most herbs are used for culinary purposes. Many popular foods such as pizzas and sauces require herbs as essential ingredients. Many sauces used in Mediterranean and Oriental cuisine are prepared from herbs.

The medicinal properties of herbs have also been recognised and valued by people. In ancient India, the yogis had carefully developed a system of medicine known as Ayurveda of which the main ingredients were herbs. The efficacy of Ayurvedic medicines has been proved by modern science and Ayurvedic medicines continue to be produced and consumed even today.

Herb seeds can be easily grown with the right conditions. They require light, well-drained soil and not too much water. Herb plants are also very pretty when they bloom. They are ideal for decorating regular gardens because of the ease with which they can be planted or transplanted. Many gardeners use herbs to augment their existing gardens.
