Downloadable Shed Plans – Don’t Build Before Reading This!

January 23, 2010 By: Abe Tyler Category: Advice General, Buildings 4 Gardens

Downloadable shed plans are certainly the way forward for anyone wanting to build a shed. It’s far easier and quicker to click a button and download shed plans onto your computer than to send off a check and wait for plans to arrive in the post.

After downloading the plans, the first thing you should do is to make a backup copy either to another computer, another hard drive or a USB flash drive. Just in case something goes wrong, you don’t want to lose your shed plans.
The second thing to do is to print the plans. It’s far easier to read and understand a printed copy than looking at it on your monitor.

Read through the plans and see that everything makes sense. You don’t have to thoroughly understand every line and detailed section at this point, but you can mark any areas that you want to come back to or which require further study.

Many downloadable shed plans are in color so do use a color printer if you can. If you’re an old hand, you may manage perfectly well in black and white but color can make shed plans easier to read, especially for relatively new woodworkers.

Chances are, your plans will get soiled and torn quite quickly, especially when you’re working with them ‘on site’. Some people laminate the plans for protection which is an excellent idea. However, it’s not so easy to add notes to a laminate surface if you need to.

Others prefer the feel and flexibility of paper. Of course, it’s easy enough to print another set of plans if the original ones become unusable. However, make sure to keep a note of any markings you’ve made on the original.
After glancing through the shed plans, put some time aside to study them more closely. Read through the instructions and make sure you know what’s required and what you need to do.

Check the materials list and, as you read through, check the points in the plan that the items refer to. Essentially, you want to run through the plans in your head imagining where the parts go and how it all fits together. You want to make sure everything makes sense and that you know how you’re going to tackle the construction.
Some beginners find this difficult at first but it becomes easier with practise and good shed plans will make the shed come alive.
