January 10, 2010 By: Lovely Andy Category: Advice General, Gardens - Hydroponics

At present, the concept of hydroponic drip irrigation system is somehow starting to gain ground among garden enthusiasts. Questions about it are also starting to build up, which is why this article is written to provide you the answers to some of the questions that have been raised. This article will also help you have a better understanding of what hydroponic drip is all about. So what is a hydroponic drip system? There are a lot of types of hydroponic techniques and the drip irrigation system is one of it. The drip irrigation system is the most commonly used hydroponic technique, because of its simplicity and effectiveness in plant cultivation. In this system, plant nutrition is provided on a pre-determined basis by the use of a timer that controls the submerged pump. This pump is connected to a main tube that further branches out into smaller tubes from where plant nutrients are being distributed unto the base of each plant. The nutrients will then tickle into the grow media, into the roots and finally into the reservoir. My First Gardening Experience!

January 10, 2010 By: Frank Okorodudu Category: Advice General

Ah, to this day I still remember my first gardening experience. It was such a disaster that I didn’t think I would ever want to garden again. I almost decided to turn my casual hobby into the most rage-inducing topic you could possibly bring up to me.

It all started a few weeks after I moved in to my first house. I was excited just to have my own grass to mow, since I had been in apartments and condos for quite a while. In between plans to paint walls and renovate the inside to exactly how I like, I thought it would be a good idea to start a fruit garden so that I could have some fresh produce and put my yard to use. At that point I didn’t really know anything at all about gardening. But still in my spunky youthful years, I decided I didn’t need help. How hard could it be to start a garden and grow stuff? After all, it happens in nature all the time and nobody even has to do anything. (more…)

Everyone Needs A Spaghetti Garden

January 10, 2010 By: James Ellison Category: Gardens - Other

One of the delightful pleasures of life are herbs. Besides adding beauty to your garden they make foods taste better and provide a pleasant scent to the air we breathe. In George Washington days everyone had a herb garden that they used for culinary, teas and medicinal purposes. That practice is slowly coming back.

A spaghetti garden is one of the most popular kitchen gardens. Anyone that has a sunny patch of ground or a window-box can grow these herbs of parsley, garlic, basil, bay laurel and oregano. A small garden space can easily yield all the herbs that you’ll need for delicious Italian meals. They are even easy to grow in a sunny window for your year-round use.

Let us take a closer look at the spaghetti garden herbs:

+Oregano is a perennial ground cover plant. Oregano is a prolific grower that can send out shoots that grow to six feet in a single season. If pruned and bunched, oregano can grow into a small border plant. It would rather have light, thin soil and lots of sun, so keep it on the south side of your garden. When the plants reach 4-5 inches harvesting can start. Pinch off the top 1/3 of the plant, just above a leaf intersection. The young leaves are actually stronger dried than fresh and are the most flavorful part of the plant. To dry, lay the leaves on newspaper or a drying screen in the sun until the leaves crumble easily. It will retain its flavor for months. (more…)

Garden Bees and Allergies

We all love gardens, be it flower gardens. Flowers seem to lift all our dull spirits and seem to make us feel good. Many people now a day have allergies and it is hard to enjoy the out side. If we choose plants and flowers wisely then the bees and allergies will just fly away.

While decorating our yards it is smart to take a clip board and draw the shape of your yard. This will help you start to plan where you wish to have a seating area versus an area with beautiful floras.

Before you purchase any plants be sure to ask the local nursery which plants attract bees and which are heavy pollen producers. Do not hesitate to go online also and look up the facts that the garden center has given you. Many times they have new people that are in a hurry and may not give you the right information. Also you can go and find a forum that will help in answering your questions. (more…)

A public garden located in Woodside, California, that is a reflection of the opulent style of the houses and gardens of wealthy San Franciscans in the early days of the 20th century.
