Ma-kee-ran’the-ra. A small genus of herbs found in w. North America and closely related to Aster .
Description
Leaves alternate, bristly. In the only cultivated species (below), flowerheads rather showy.
How to Grow
This species needs well-drained soil with pH 6.0-7.0. It grows best in cool, dry climates, but will have 4-6 weeks of color in warm, humid climates. Start seeds indoors in early spring; break dormancy by mixing seeds with moist peat moss and refrigerating at 40° F (4.5° C) for 2-3 weeks. Transplant hardened-off seedlings after danger of hard frost is past. Or sow seeds outdoors in early spring or fall.
Machaeranthera tanacetifolia
Tahoka Daisy . 1-2 ft. (30-60 cm) high. Flowerheads to 2 in. (5 cm) wide, lavender-blue, the rays slender and pointed. S. Dak. to Mexico and Calif. Half-hardy annual.
