Spring is a busy time for gardeners. It’s a time to prepare for the summer by pruning, cleaning and planting. It can be a lot of hard work, so make sure that you are only doing the those tasks that will give you the most benefits in your garden and your yard. Here are some easy to follow tips for gardening in the spring time that will ensure a beautiful and bountiful garden all summer long.
1. Clean Your Yard. Rake up any debris left on your lawn after the winter snow has melted. Remove any mulch from the soil so that the soil can properly thaw out. Once the soil has thawed and warmed up, put down new mulch and remember to keep it away from the base of plants.
2. Make Repairs. The winter cold and frost can cause cracks and other damage to steps, fences and pathways, so check to see what repairs are needed in your yard. The daylily, Hemerocallis, is actually not a lily even though it is called one. Hemerocallis is the combination of the Greek words for “day” and “beauty,” which stems from the observation that each flower lasts only one day. Fortunately for us, there are many flower buds on each daylily flower stalk, and many stalks in each plant so we are blessed with a clump that blooms for several weeks.
Daylilies have the reputation for being tough, adaptable, vigorous plants that can withstand droughts and require less care than other perennials. Daylilies are one of the most popular perennials and for good reason. They are: (more…)

The benefits of gardening under grow light systems are hard to ignore. I can’t imagine a better way to grow a healthy crop of green seedlings. If indoor gardening is one of your favorite hobbies, discount grow lights will guarantee your orchids, African violets, and hibiscus will continue to bloom year-round. Maybe you prefer growing wintertime plants such as vine-ripened tomatoes, herbs or salad greens. 400 watt grow lights can accomplish the same results.
A general rule I like to follow for my garden’s required indoor plant lighting is that 1000W adequately provides enough lighting for my garden area. If you are looking to make your plant grow lights system more efficient, use a reflector combined with a light mover. Don’t forget that many types of hydroponic hps grow light systems use a ballast to ignite the bulb. (more…)

Looking for a garden activity for that junior gardener of yours? Here’s one that will surely be a challenge, have him/her start growing a pineapple plant. Most people think that you need live in the tropics to grow a pineapple plant, you don’t, however it is a challenge.
These plants are best started in the fall of the year and kept indoors in a bright sunny window. To begin the plant you will need to cut off the top of a whole pineapple and remove any excess fruit and skin from around the leaves. The top should then be place in a small bowl of water with ¼ teaspoon of Epson salt, being sure to keep the water level from 1/8 to ¼ of an inch above the bottom of the leaves then place the bowl in a sunny window for about two weeks adding more water as it is needed. Greenhouse Building Future Promises Change to our Economy and Lifestyle by Judy Stevens
Greenhouses have been used in the past as a medium for hobbyists for their garden greenhouses but commercial greenhouses are becoming more and more prevalent as the world becomes more “green conscious” and energy efficient.
To explain, many universities naturally have their commercial greenhouses, for their agricultural studies. However, many elementary and pre-schools are also building greenhouses as this is a key factor in raising the generations to come. Not only are the children learning about growing and life, but they are also learning about our earth, importance of organic growing, eating habits and self worth.
As our land and our soil become more and more obsolete, another good reason to build a greenhouse is to plant a garden using hydroponics. Hydroponics is used to grow without the use of soil but something more available that can transport nutrients to the roots of the plants. (more…)

Warm winters and sunny summers make it feasible for San Diego residents to garden year round. Organic gardening is especially beneficial to this ocean side community that is nestled between the beautiful shore and the mountains. Soil condition in San Diego can be an issue. Those in the higher elevations may find many rocks, and most people will need to water their gardens frequently to prevent soil from drying out.

One of the best things gardeners can do is to save rainwater in rain barrels and use it to their gain. Rainfall in San Diego is often spotty. The majority of rainfall happens in January, February and March, while summers are likely to be to be quite dry, especially the months of June, July and August. It is useful to place rain barrels under your gutter downspouts to collect the water to irrigate your garden during dry spells. (more…)
