Weeding Your Garden

October 20, 2005 By: Eudora DeWynter Category: Pest Control

There are several ways to successfully weed a garden, adding a good heavy layer of mulch will cut down on weeds but the most successful way is the old fashioned way, pulling them by hand. Hand weeding is the easiest, quickest and by far the most convenient way to eliminate weeds from your garden.

The best tool however to use when hand weeding is a hand small hand hoe for those stubborn larger weed that have taken a good root hold. If you have a vegetable garden that has long rows of plants then a traditional Draw Hoe will be best in removing weeds.

If weeds have begun to grow between the rows I suggest a Warren Hoe, it has a sharp pointed blade that just right for removing small weeds in between rows and making furrows. If you have a large area that needs weeding use a Dutch hoe it easy to use with a simple pushes and pulls action. (more…)

5 Rose Garden Ideas

October 12, 2005 By: James Ellison Category: Gardens - Flower

If you are like me and have been scared away from growing roses because you believed they were hard to grow, it’s time to put away your incorrect conception. Roses are amazingly easy to grow and care for. They are far from being the picky, pest-infested plants that they are believed out to be.

Roses have 5 fundamental requirements:

1. They need plenty of sun. With very few exclusions, roses enjoy the sun. Select a spot for roses that has at least 6 hours of sun per day, and they will pay you back with fine-looking, flashy blooms.

2. Water is a must. Roses are thirsty plants. Prepare to give your rose garden a good everyday soaking to add-on to the rain. (more…)

October 08, 2005 By: Lec Watkins Category: Pest Control, Recipes & Canning

With the economic climate and a move towards people creating things for themselves more and more, there is a growing interest in making your own garden products: pesticides, fertilizers and equipment. One of the simplest ways to start with this ‘make it yourself’ mentality is by creating some simple garden pesticides at home.

There are many recipes for homemade garden pesticides. Most will work out much cheaper than buying an equivalent product and many will be more effective. A lot of them will increase your green credentials as you can recycle waste products at home, turning them into useful garden products. Many of the homemade recipes will allow for safer pet-friendly gardening too.

For this recipe though we’re taking a tougher approach. Sometimes (not often) insect infestations can be so bad that truly environmentally products like soap spray just will not eradicate the problem. At times like that its time to call on homemade nicotine spray.  (more…)

Weather: Keep a Close Eye on Frost Conditions in your Area

October 04, 2005 By: Michael Podlesny Category: Advice General

Frost is the condition that occurs when temperatures reach a low enough level to turn moisture into ice. Usually you will hear the term frost more so when the overnight dew that gets formed on your front lawn or on your car freezes.

If you do not live in an area affected by temperatures that drop near or below thirty-two degrees then you probably never experienced frost conditions. For those of us that live in areas where you can get frost then you know every well how aggravating it can be sometimes.

You get up early in the morning, go out to your car, put the key into the ignition, turn the car on and you are ready to leave, except the fact that the dew froze overnight and now you have frost on your windows. You can’t see out of them therefore you get out the trusty old ice scraper and start chiseling away at the stuff so you can get on your way. (more…)
