Well it is that time of year again and you are getting ready to plant your garden. As you dig your garden tiller out of the corner of the garage you notice it is full of cobwebs. Looks like you will have to perform some garden tiller maintenance.
So what sort of maintenance do you have to do before starting up your garden tiller for the first time? A lot has to do with the way you prepared your garden tiller for the winter storage. If you drained the fuel or added Sta-Bil to the gasoline you are in better shape than most people.
First it is always recommended that you follow the manufactures guidance. This procedure should be used as a general guideline.
The first thin I always do is give my garden tiller a good washing to get the dust off of it. Next for safety I pull the spark plug wire off. If you did not drain your fuel you will have to now. The best way is to remove the fuel line from the tank and let it drain outside away from anything electrical. Including your cell phone. (more…)

When you view a quiet pool on a warm summer’s day, the stillness elicits a feeling of tranquility. The reflections of flowers, leaves, birds, and sky harmonize with the surrounding landscape. There are three common ailments that roses are susceptible to, Rose rust, Powdery or Downey Mildew and Black Spot all of which are known as fungal infections. They are easily treated with fungicides when they are applied at the first signs of the disease or before the onset of hot, humid weather is evident. Prevention is one of the most important parts of growing and caring of roses, although prevention is not always possible. There are however a few easy precautionary tips for preventing roses diseases.
First begin by promoting strong healthy plants by providing plenty of water and fertilizers, along with good air circulation, then keeping them pruned, water at the roots whenever possible trying not to get the leaves wet ( this sometimes promotes diseases ) then cut or pick off old weak leaves and stems.
Most of all watch for signs of insects or diseases on your other garden plants, they are often times the breeding ground for insects and diseases and insects are the carriers of many diseases. Once they are spotted in your garden start treatment right away. (more…)

Growing cabbages is fairly easy. Cabbages varieties are grouped according to the time they will reach maturity – Spring, early Summer, Summer, or Autumn. Cabbages are an annual plant.
Cabbages need rich, fertile, soil that is both moist and firm soil. Ideally suited to planting in raised beds. Of note, cabbages should be rotated in there planting each season. Best suited to soil rich in nitrogen and well manured each season.
Particular attention should be paid as to when to sow your cabbages, always read the instructions on the seed packet to do this. Initially sow your cabbages in biodegradable modules as this makes for easier planting in their final location and avoids disturbing the roots, they should be ready to be planted out on your plot in around a month, ensure they are kept well watered during this period.
As the cabbages grow keep them supported by earthing up around them. Spring cabbages may need protecting under a clear cover such as a glass or plastic cloches until established. The newer varieties of cabbage tend to store far better than older types. Your cabbages plants should be dug up after the head has been removed and harvested. (more…)
